Eleven women from all over Baghdad of various ethnic and religious backgrounds met in June of 2004 to create an association to serve Baghdadi women and strengthen their potential as citizens of our city. We registered our association and began working on a few small projects as proof of concept of our ideas and mission. A few months later, we met again as a group and further focused our mission and our goals in order to begin our operations in full.

Although our funding has been minimal so far, we as founders managed to find local resources and volunteers in order to implement the initial projects.

Our Mission...

Baghdad Women's Association (BWA) is an independent non governmental association, It's mission is to raise the level of knowledge of it's members intellectually and socially, And to empower their participation in decision making through training, conferences, panel discussions, and workshops.

Our Goals...

- International and external transparency.

- Decrease illiteracy amongst women in Baghdad.

- Increase Baghdad women's participation in the election process.

- Support and training of female candidates that focus on women's issues and demands.

- Educate Baghdad women in global women debate.

- Becoming a bridge between BWA and local and international organizations.

- Increase networking between women in Baghdad.

- Assist and train women in order to help them become more financially independent.
